Subject: Commentary Comment/Question

In January my father passed away at the young age of 51. I had been away from the church for about 3-4 years. I grew up believing in Christ, as my savior, at the age of 10 I accepted his salvation, and was born again. When I was 17 or 18 I walked away from Christ, and tried to not look back. God never let me go. He sent person after person into my life to get me to come home. I refused, till January, when he took my dad home to be with him. I’ve struggled over the past months with the hopes of finding a church. I finally found a home at Kalamazoo Valley Family Church. God has been leading me back into his arms day by day.

Recently my best friend of 5 years and I had a VERY long debate. She believes you can loose your salvation. Now this went against everything I believed or was ever taught. But she had some verses to back it up. I’m still like a baby in my faith, still growing in Christ and his word. I had no verses to repeat to her, except, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Since that discussion I have been looking to God to lead me where he would. I have talked to many strong Christians, and it seemed to be half and half. I was unsure, had I had been taught the right thing all my life?

Today I searched ask jeeves and found your site. The words you wrote spoke to me and confirmed what I thought my heart was saying. Satan is trying to cast doubt in my heart. Your words were so reassuring and I could feel Christ telling me “It’s all right, I’m here forever.” As I read further and further the stronger the urge to cry became. I sit here writing you this to thank you for listening to your Lord. To thank you for your faith in Christ. Thank you for you willingness to tell.

Your sister in Christ,

Dear Becky,

Thank you so much for your wonderful letter and your kind words. Like you, I had a similar life. I was away from God for a time. God in his grace will allow something to come into our lives to bring us back to him. It may be discipline or the death of a loved one or the loss of something else dear to us. He deals with us as his children who have gone astray. That is why the Bible uses the human example of the family. Once you are born into a family you can never get out of it. You can sin and even renounce your parents but you will always be their child. The same is true with God. Once you are born into Gods family you become Gods property and no matter what you do you can’t get out even if you want to. This is because of Gods grace. If we stray from God he will do what is necessary to get us back. However it is still our decision. This is what the Prodigal son parable is about. He started off as a son, went astray, and returned as a son. His father always loved him and never renounced him.

I have studied the verses that people use to try and prove that you can lose your salvation. Someday I plan on writing an article on them because the verses they use are nearly always speaking about either loss of rewards in heaven, the sin unto death on earth or are taken out of context. The sin unto death is when a person chooses to live his whole life in sin and doesn’t confess it to God. He is still saved but dies a very horrible death and loses his rewards in Heaven.

Jesus said in John 6:37 quoted in a more accurate translation from the Greek: “All believers that God the Father gives to me shall come to me and he that comes to me I will under no circumstances cast out”

To know the truth all you have to do is seek the truth and God will lead you to it.

Please read our commentary on “Fear vs. Faith” if you haven’t already.
