Japan’s most powerful ever recorded 8.9 earthquake

Total chaos is the best way I could describe it. Even the aftershocks are very powerful and caused a 33 foot wave of water that slams Japan’s coast. Scientists said the quake ranked as the fifth-largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month. At time of this post the death toll was officially 88 with 349 people missing, Kyodo news agency estimates the death toll at more than 1,000.

One other thing I’d like to point out that from the time the event took place to the time it’s live around the world was incredibly fast considering the size and scale of the earthquake and it’s related aftershocks which many of which was as power as the 7.0s and 6.6s. My USGS email had just a ton of records of earthquake and aftershocks. I’d also point out we had many smaller earthquakes in the days just before this event. Smaller in size and power before the big one came. Pray for the saints in Japan.

Global Warming stalled?

Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out

Global warming appears to have stalled. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents.

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. Average temperatures have not increased for over a decade.

NOAA: Summer Temperature Below Average for U.S.

The average June-August 2009 summer temperature for the contiguous United States was below average – the 34th coolest on record, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. August was also below the long-term average. The analysis is based on records dating back to 1895.

Sunspots gone for good? Nobody knows.

September 3, 2009: The sun is in the pits of the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century. Weeks and sometimes whole months go by without even a single tiny sunspot. The quiet has dragged out for more than two years, prompting some observers to wonder, are sunspots disappearing?

"Personally, I’m betting that sunspots are coming back," says researcher Matt Penn of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Tucson, Arizona. But, he allows, "there is some evidence that they won’t."

Penn’s colleague Bill Livingston of the NSO has been measuring the magnetic fields of sunspots for the past 17 years, and he has found a remarkable trend.
